EVENTS AND SOCIAL ART

Cearcall’s socially engaged practice unfolds through artistic research events, workshops, and gatherings that bring people together in conversation and creative experimentation. We understand these encounters as opportunities for “worlding”: collectively imagining, rehearsing, and embodying ways of living otherwise in times of ecological uncertainty. Through ritual, storytelling, making, dialogue, movement, and shared reflection, participants are invited to explore how more regenerative, caring, and culturally rooted futures might emerge within contemporary Scotland. Rather than offering fixed solutions, Cearcall creates hospitable spaces of inquiry where diverse experiences and knowledges can meet, fostering imagination as a form of ecological practice and encouraging participants to ask how we might learn to world our world better together.

Drawing inspiration from ancient nature-based aesthetics—such as Celtic tattooing practices, symbolic motifs, and relationships to colour and adornment—Cearcall seeks to reinterpret these traditions through a contemporary lens. It advocates for thrifting, mending, adapting, and crafting garments as creative acts that prioritise innovation over consumption, reimagining fashion as a participatory practice of care and resourcefulness. Equally, through the playful merging of colours, textures, and forms, Cearcall embraces queer and increasingly androgynous modes of self-expression that challenge normative boundaries of identity and appearance.

In dialogue with phenomenological thought, particularly Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s understanding of the body as our primary means of being-in-the-world, fashion is understood not as superficial decoration but as a relational practice through which we perceive, encounter, and continually fabulate both ourselves and the worlds we wish to inhabit.
